Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about car rental in Koh Samui — deposits, insurance, driving, pickup and licences.
Compare Car Rental DealsCan I get a rental car delivered to my Chaweng hotel?
Yes. Most local firms offer free hotel delivery in Chaweng, typically for bookings of three or more days. Firms such as Samui Cars Group and SamuiRentCars both advertise free delivery with a minimum rental period. Confirm the delivery window when you book, particularly for late-evening arrivals.
How far is Chaweng from Samui Airport?
About 10–15 minutes by car. The airport sits on the north coast in Bophut, and Chaweng is a short drive south along the ring road. It is one of the closest resort areas to USM on the island.
Is parking difficult in Chaweng?
Yes — Chaweng has the tightest parking situation on Koh Samui. Your best options are the TOPS Supermarket paid lot (validate with a purchase), free spaces on Lake Road, or your hotel's own lot. Avoid parking on the main beach road strip during evening hours. Elsewhere on the island — Lamai, Bophut, and especially Nathon — parking is considerably easier.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Chaweng?
Yes. Thailand requires foreign drivers to carry both a valid IDP (1949 Geneva Convention) and their original home driving licence together — neither document is sufficient on its own. You must obtain the IDP before arriving in Thailand; it cannot be issued on arrival. Police checkpoints operate in Chaweng, and driving without an IDP voids your rental insurance and can result in a fine of 1,000–2,000 THB.
Is renting a car better than using taxis in Chaweng?
Yes, if you plan to explore beyond the strip. Taxis in Chaweng do not use meters — a short trip runs 300–400 THB minimum, and cross-island fares reach 600–800 THB. At two or three trips per day, a rental car paying 700–1,200 THB per day quickly becomes the cheaper and more flexible option. A car also avoids the inconsistency of Grab availability outside central Chaweng and after 22:00.
Which side of the road does Koh Samui drive on?
Koh Samui drives on the left. All rental cars are right-hand drive, meaning the steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle.
Do I need an IDP to drive on Koh Samui?
Yes. You must carry both an International Driving Permit and your original home driving licence. Neither document is accepted without the other. Without a valid IDP, your rental insurance is void and you face a fine of 1,000-2,000 THB at any checkpoint.
Do I need a 4WD or SUV on Koh Samui?
Not for the main ring road Route 4169, which is paved and manageable in any standard car. A higher-clearance car or SUV is strongly recommended for the steep and narrow Route 4170 in the southwest and for interior roads leading to viewpoints and attractions such as the Secret Buddha Garden.
Is it safe to drive during the monsoon season?
Yes, with care. The Gulf monsoon runs from October to December, with November the wettest month. Expect flash flooding on low-lying ring road sections near Nathon and south Chaweng. Slow down significantly on wet roads, avoid the interior and southwest tracks in heavy rain, and never drive through floodwater of unknown depth.
What is the emergency number for police in Koh Samui?
Call 191 for police. For the English-speaking Tourist Police, available 24 hours a day, call 1155. For an ambulance, call 1669.
Do I need an International Driving Permit on Koh Samui?
Yes. Thai law requires foreign drivers to carry both a valid IDP and their original home-country licence. Presenting one without the other is treated as driving without a valid licence: the fine is 1,000–2,000 THB and your rental insurance is void, leaving you personally liable for any damage or third-party claims.
Is there car rental at Samui Airport (USM)?
Yes. In-terminal desks include Drive Car Rental, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, and Avis. Hertz and Keddy operate a meet-and-greet service (phone on arrival). Local firms such as James Rental and Samui Cars deliver to the terminal but have no desk. Most desks are open 08:00–20:00 or 21:00; Bangkok Airways operates flights until around 22:30, so late arrivals should pre-book and confirm after-hours delivery.
Should I rent a car or a scooter on Koh Samui?
Rent a car. By most estimates, motorcycles and scooters are involved in around 74–82% of road accidents and fatalities on the island. Beyond the safety risk, riding a scooter without a Category-A IDP endorsement voids your insurance and leaves you paying hospital costs directly. A car is the practical, all-weather, family-safe choice.
Can I take my rental car to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao?
No. Nearly all rental contracts prohibit taking the vehicle off Koh Samui, and because many cars are GPS-tracked, putting one on a ferry typically voids your insurance. Koh Tao has no car ferry. The correct approach is to park at Nathon pier (large free lot), Maenam pier, or Bang Rak pier and take a passenger ferry. Fares are 200–500 THB to Koh Phangan and around 600–700 THB to Koh Tao.
How long does it take to drive around Koh Samui?
Route 4169 — the ring road — is approximately 51 km and takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete non-stop. In practice, average speeds rarely exceed 40 km/h due to traffic near Chaweng and Lamai, speed bumps, and the island's frequent stops. Budget a full half-day if you want to stop at beaches or viewpoints along the way.
Do I need a rental car to see Koh Samui's beaches?
A car is by far the easiest option. Songthaews (shared pickups) run on fixed routes and infrequent schedules — they can get you to Chaweng and Lamai, but not reliably to Silver Beach, Choeng Mon, Lipa Noi, or any of the waterfalls. Taxis work but add up quickly once you're making more than two stops a day.
Can I drive to Ang Thong National Marine Park?
No — the park is a 42-island archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand and is only accessible by licensed tour boat. Drive to Nathon Pier (free, wide parking), join a tour from there, and leave your car at the pier.
Do I need a 4WD for the waterfalls and Secret Buddha Garden?
For Na Muang Waterfalls 1 and 2, any standard car is fine — the parking area is reachable on normal roads. The Secret Buddha Garden is the exception: the final 400 metres of track is steep and unpaved, and a car with higher clearance (SUV or crossover) is strongly recommended. Avoid this road entirely in the October–December wet season.
Is renting a car cheaper than taking taxis around Samui?
Yes, once you make two or three trips per day. A cross-island taxi costs 600–800 THB each way; a full day's car rental starts around 700–1,200 THB in low season. The more attractions you plan to visit, the more the rental saves you.
Is there car rental at Samui Airport?
Yes. Eight companies operate in-terminal or meet-and-greet desks at USM, including Drive Car Rental, Avis, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, ASAP, Thai Rent A Car, and SmackOne. Enterprise/Alamo/National is a 300-meter walk from baggage. Local firms such as James Rental Samui and Samui Cars Group deliver directly to the terminal for bookings of three days or more.
Is it cheaper to fly into Surat Thani?
The airfare is cheaper — roughly 400–600 THB versus 1,200–4,000+ THB into USM — but reaching Samui from Surat Thani adds a 90-minute bus ride to Donsak pier plus a 1.5–2.5-hour car ferry, for a total transfer of 2 hours 15 minutes to 5 hours with luggage. For most stays of five days or more the time cost outweighs the fare saving.
Can I take my rental car on a ferry to Koh Phangan?
No. Nearly all Samui rental contracts prohibit leaving the island, and because many cars are GPS-tracked, taking one on a ferry to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao typically voids your insurance. Park at a Samui pier — Nathon, Maenam, or Bang Rak — and take a passenger boat instead.
Do I need an IDP to collect a car at USM?
Yes. Thai law requires foreign drivers to carry both a valid International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention) and their original home country licence together. Neither document is accepted alone. Your IDP must be obtained in your home country before travel — it cannot be issued in Thailand. Driving or collecting a rental without an IDP voids your insurance and carries a fine of 1,000–2,000 THB at checkpoints.
